Richmond Primary School Newsletter 8th November 2023
Principal's Address
Dear Families,
We have had a few busy weeks with several classes out and about on excursions and classes utilising the nature play space. It has been a time of assessment of student learning, with children undertaking Reading, Maths and Spelling assessments to measure their growth across the year.
External School Review
On Monday, November 13th and Tuesday, November 14th, we have our External School Review conducted by Mrs Sally Gill and Mrs Tracey Johnston, experienced principals.
So why does the DECYP undertake external reviews of schools?
The External School Review Framework underpinning the Review identifies the key levers for school improvement and has been shaped and informed by the National School Improvement Tool. The National School Improvement Tool brings together the findings from international research into the practices of highly effective schools and school leaders. The Framework focuses on the practices proven to positively impact achievement outcomes for all students at the classroom level. It is not intended to document every aspect of the school’s processes, programs and outcomes.
The External School Review Report outlines aspects of the school’s performance verified through the review process and provides recommendations for key improvement strategies. In line with our approach to School Improvement, recommendations from the External School Review must be integrated into our School Improvement Plan.
If you wish to have input into the Review, you can attend the School Association interview from 3 – 4 pm on Monday, November 13th.
If you cannot attend, the reviewers will be happy to phone you. If you wish to receive a phone call, please get in touch with the office with the best number for you to be contacted and indicate whether Monday or Tuesday suits you best.
Pre kinder sessions have commenced at Richmond Primary, and we have enjoyed meeting our new students for 2023. Most are eager to attend and explore their new space.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Caitlyn Morrisby and Mrs Josette Scott for the planning and preparation that goes into making these sessions successful.
We will be offering an information and welcome session for parents on Monday, December 4th at 1.30 pm and in conjunction with the School Association, we will provide information about how to manage a smooth transition to school, general information about Richmond Primary, uniforms and the role of the School Association.
Early Years Athletics Carnival
Next Thursday, November 16th, we will hold our K- Year 2 Athletics Carnival at the Richmond Football Ground from 1 – 2.30 pm. This fun event focuses on participation for all.
Parents are welcome to join us, but I ask that parents remain behind the oval fence while events are being run. This helps with the smooth running of the program.
Colour Run
In conjunction with the School Association, we are launching a new whole school event on Thursday, December 14th, with our inaugural Colour Run.
The event will commence at 1.30 p.m, and all parents, carers, and families are welcome to attend to view the fun. In preparation, every student will require a white tee shirt for the event.
Regards,
Clare McVilly

5/6A News
On Tuesday, both Grade 5/6 classes visited Caldew Park in West Hobart, where they had the opportunity to explore the park and spend time together across both class groups. Later in the morning they then enjoyed some viewing time of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie at Village Cinemas. Students were asked to put on their film critic hat to review the movie as part of an English focus this term on film reviews. Popcorn was devoured and plenty of laughs were had, as we watched this action packed, high energy animated film.
Students this week also participated in the First Aid in Schools program presented by St Johns Ambulance. The focus of this program is about empowering children to feel confident and capable in first aid situations. Children discussed the St Johns Action Plan of DRS ABCD and what they could do in various situations of need or emergency. Children put each other into the recovery position, practised CPR on a manikin and watched a demonstration of attaching a defibrillator.
If students wish to consolidate their learning with St Johns First Aid, there is a free APP that can be downloaded. This APP aims to engage children in different first aid scenarios where they have to make decisions using the DRS ABCD action plan.
