Richmond Primary Newsletter 8th May 2024
Principal's Address
Dear Families,
Here we go, another exciting school term ahead! I hope you enjoyed your holidays. I was greeted by many smiling faces last Monday as our students returned to school, always a welcomed sight.
Our social skills focus for this term is “Being Responsible”. Responsibility is something all children need to learn. By helping our students develop responsibility, we are helping them reach their full potential. Responsibility involves making decisions, being trusted, and learning to take credit and responsibility for one’s actions - whether good or bad. Taking responsibility is not just about how the choices children make affect themselves, but also how their choices and actions affect others.
Being responsible helps children to feel important, that they are contributing to their family, our school and the community in positive ways. One of the best ways to teach your child about responsibility is to model the behaviours for them. Look out for family members, friends and neighbours, volunteer in your community, and be dependable. Arrive at school and to gatherings on time, admit when you’re wrong, and apologize for mistakes. If our children see us doing these things, they are much more likely to do the same.
Over the holiday break we had two events, the Bunnings Sauage sizzle and ANZAC Day.
ANZAC DAY in RICHMOND.
On Thursday 25th April the Richmond community came together to hold the annual ANZAC DAY event and although the weather was cool there were many people in attendance. ANZAC Day is the national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and peace keeping operations and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served. ANZAC Day was originally devised to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who served in the Gallipoli campaign, their first engagement in the First World War (1914–1918).
Our school was ably represented by Harry and Mackenzie who had the honour of raising the flag and, Hamish and Isla who laid the wreath on behalf of the school. Thank you to Mrs Jan Ross for making the beautiful wreath and for the parents who came along to support our students.

BUNNING’S BBQ Fundraiser
On Saturday 20th April our School Association ran a sausage sizzle at Bunnings to fund raise for the school. We raised $1776.65 for our wonderful school. Lots of fun was had on the day, and a huge thank you must go to Hannah Direen, Rebecca Jones, Lee Miezitis, Jonna Vennola, Andrea Easton, Mark Alexander, Britt Kean, James Spencer, Rebecca White, Kate Lewis, Heather Adams, Ash Adams and Jane Burleigh, the wonderful team of volunteers.

National Walk Safely to School Day - 10th May 2024
Walk Safely to School Day is an important reminder about the health benefits of walking and exercising, as well as road safety.
Now in its 25th year, National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event, and many Tasmanian schools are participating this year.
This initiative is a wonderful way to encourage regular exercise, highlight the environmental benefits of walking, and of course, promote and teach children about road safety.
Children are most at risk of pedestrian accidents because they are less visible to drivers, which is why it is so important to continue to teach and remind them how to be safe when on or near roads and traffic.
So please add this reminder to your calendar and join us on the walk to school this Friday. You can meet us either at the Richmond Oval, the Bridge or the Village Green at 8.30 am and we will walk to school together.
There was great excitement on the first day of Term 2, as our Year 6 students have received their new hoodies.

CONGRATULATIONS
CHAMPIONS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Congratulations to our athletes who recently attended the Champions Athletics Carnival – held at the Domain Athletics Centre. Those who attended were: Max M, Tim A, Leo M, Kara V, Lucy J, Cooper T, Archie K, Ryan M, Sam M, Jason R, and Bailey W. Well, done on being selected to represent our school at such a high level. Two students, Tim and Leo have made it through to the State finals on the 10th May.
LET’S MAKE EVERYDAY COUNT
By showing up to school every day, your child will have the best opportunity at a bright future. It gives them every chance to be around friends, learn new things, and find interests.
Good attendance habits can sometimes be hard to stick. But creating a solid routine, from the start, can set your child up for success for the year ahead.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Please always talk to us if you are having trouble getting your child to school. We are here to help.
Regards
Clare McVilly
3/4B HASS and Maths
3/4B have been busy learning about the significance of different events, symbols and emblems to Australia’s identity. We have spent some time learning about various celebrations and commemorations that are officially recognised. As a part of our discoveries, we learnt about ANZAC Day. We made connections to our recent learning and the commemorative ceremonies many of us attended during the school holidays. We created some silhouette sunrise artwork to conclude our unit.

We have also been busy learning about different tools we can use when measuring. We had some fun estimating and measuring the lengths of various animals on our school oval.

Students in grades Prep through to 6 have been actively participating in pretend play and imaginative role-playing through improvised drama sessions. They have invented characters and scenarios, with lots of enthusiasm and engagement. Early childhood classes have been utilising stories and props to retell known stories. Whilst students in Years 3 through 6 have been using props to craft infomercials.

St Johns Excursion
On Tuesday the first of May, a group of students and Mr Johnston visited St John’s Catholic School for a wee learning session and learned how to weave string out of river reeds. At St John’s some of their pupils assisted us in the string making process. Although it was tough at first students eventually figured it out. Thank you to our parent help from Simon and Andrea Easton. - By Hamish

The Champions Carnival was held on the 1st of May in sunny conditions at the Domain.
We had some fantastic running on the day from our students.
Kara made the 100m final.
Leo came 2nd in the 200m Final.
Tim came 1st in the 400m final and placed in the 100m and 200m.
The boys Grade 3 team ran 4th in the relay.
Cooper ran 6th in the 800m final and Max threw well in the Vortex. Lucy just missed the final in the 100m.
Tim and Leo were selected for the State Carnival in Launceston on the 10th of May which is an outstanding achievement.
Stem Challenge
This term, we were thrilled to return to school and witness the impressive results of the holiday Stem Challenge. Students showcased their ingenuity through the use of recycled materials, repurposed items, and imaginative LEGO constructions. We commend all participants for their efforts and extend our gratitude to families for their support and encouragement. Well done!

Congratulations Shakoda!!
Last Thursday night Shakoda Oswin, a past student of Richmond Primary School, was given the opportunity to take to the court with the TNL South East Suns team. The TNL (Tasmanian Netball League) is the highest netball competition in the state. Previously, Shakoda has represented her age group interstate. At just 15 years of age, to be asked to play with the U19 TNL team is a huge achievement.
Congratulations, Shakoda. We are all very proud of you and know this is just the beginning of a successful netball career for you.
