Richmond Primary School Newsletter 22nd May 2024
Principal's Address
Dear Families,
Last Friday 10th May was National Walk to School Day and we held our annual walk to school. It was a mild but slightly damp walk to school for our students, staff, and parents, but still very enjoyable for everyone who came along for the walk. It is certainly a lovely opportunity to chat as we walk, catch up with friends and just enjoy the leisurely walk to school.

Our kinders have completed their first term at Richmond Primary and so I thought it was timely to get some feedback on how they have settled into formal schooling and what they like about being at school.
These are some of their comments about the things they love at Richmond Primary School.

If there are any parents free to help on the day I’m sure Mr Mark Nichols, our P.E teacher would be very appreciative.
Lantern Walk
With less than one month before our annual Lantern Walk, I hope families are busy making lanterns to light the way on the evening. This is a very special event for our school so please keep the date free and if you can help in anyway, please contact the School Association or the school office.

Please, have your say on ATTENDANCE.
We know that education has a positive impact on the lives of children and young people, and that every day at school can help them have bright lives and positive futures.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) is doing statewide consultation on school attendance. 3P Advisory is independently running the consultation. Your answers are confidential, and you won’t be identified.
This will help us better understand any barriers that may be in the way, and what supports are needed to help with getting to school. You can also share your thoughts about what you like or don’t like about our Every school day matters campaign.
We want to hear from students, their families, our staff, and anyone in the community. You. Take part in an online survey, share or vote for suggestions, or join an online drop-in session via the 3P website. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Every piece of feedback counts. Thanks for helping shape future DECYP initiatives, school-based engagement strategies and public awareness campaigns.
Regards
Clare McVilly

Digital Technologies
This year students in Prep – Grade 6 get the opportunity to participate in Digital Technologies.
Prep – 2 are learning about simple coding with bee-bot robots, being safe online, and simple word processing skills.
3-4 are learning how to save their work in the cloud so that they can access it from all devices, and safe procedures for collaborating online.
5-6 are considering the recent surge in AI and the impact on society including risks and benefits.
Students in 5-6 are also invited to join Minecraft on Monday’s at lunch and a select group of students are learning about Lego Spike and will hopefully be instructing their peers soon!
Parents are welcome to talk to Mr Johnston about the program at anytime and are encouraged to discuss online safety at home.

Calling for volunteers!
This year we are Celebrating 20 years of Richmond’s special annual winter lantern walk. Help us make this year even more memorable for our children and community.
Each year, our school and community gather to take part in a mid-winter solstice tradition, which originally started in 2004 by the Neuberger family, to bring light and celebration to the darkest time of the year.
We will kick off the night at 5pm, with food, tea, coffee and mulled wine served until 8pm. At 5.45pm all K-6 children will perform a song in the hall, before commencing our escorted walk with our lanterns around the village from 6pm.
