Richmond Primary School Newsletter 19th June 2024
Principal's Address
Dear Families,
I’m hoping to see many of you at our annual Lantern Walk tomorrow evening. This beautiful community event is well worth attending, so rug up and come along.
Mid-year reports
A reminder to families that mid-year reports will be distributed on Thursday 20th June 2024.
For students in Years 1 - 6 the report will show your child’s learning achievement on a 9-point visual scale for students (and for Prep students at the end of the year).
The 9-point scale shows where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level.
There will be no teacher comments in this report, however we will be including evidence of leaning in English and Mathematics, these work samples provide you with a great opportunity to discuss how your child is progressing with their learning. Parent teacher interviews will also be conducted during week 10 of Term 2
For more information about reports:
Visit the Department’s website at: Reporting - The Department for Education, Children and Young People Tasmania (decyp.tas.gov.au)

Swimming and Water Safety Program
Next week and for the following fortnight our students will be attending the Swimming and Water Safety Program at Oceana pool in Mornington.
The Swimming and Water Safety Program (SWSP) is an integral component of primary education in Tasmanian Government schools. The program provides mandated swimming and water safety instruction to all Year 3, 4 and 5 students. Year 6 student assessed as ‘at risk’ are invited to continue in the program.
The fundamental purpose of the program is for students to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and understandings to promote safety and enjoyment in and around a range of aquatic environments.
The sequential development of water skills, safety and survival techniques and stroke development make learning to swim an important area of focus of the Health and Physical Education curriculum.
Students will need their bathers, towel and goggles if they prefer to use them. The school has a set of swimming caps, but if your child prefers to wear their own, please pack that as well. They will also need a change of clothes; warm clothing is recommended as the move from the pool back to school will be very cold during this wintery blast we are currently experiencing. Some additional food is also recommended as students are usually very hungry on their return from the pool. Please ensure students with long hair have their hair tied up.
MOVE WELL, EAT WELL at RICHMOND
A fruit and veg break is a chance for children to enjoy fruit and vegetables and make it a normal, easy part of everyday. Our classes usually have their fruit and veg break at around 10 am each morning. Sometimes, individual teachers may choose a time of day that suits them, for example:
- As a break during the longest teaching block
- As a ‘settling down’ period e.g. after daily PE or when students return from lunch
- During a period when work does not stop e.g. during silent reading.
You can support your child to have a serve of fruit or vegetables or both by providing the fruit and vegetables precut and ready to eat.
Regards
Clare

- Richmond bridge is the oldest bridge in Australia - Stelios
- The bridge has 6 arches and 2 ways to walk through on each side of the river – Renny and Milo
- The bridge has incredible strength for its age - Riley
- The people who live in the town want it to stay old looking - Odyn
- The sandstone came from Butchers Hill, and it was cut down to size - Harrison
- The bridge was made for horses and carriages to pass over the river - Brooklyn
- The bridge brings tourists to the town - Eboni
- It’s a special place – Annabelle
In our classroom we have proudly displayed our sketches – feel free to drop by to check them out!

Government House Excursion recount
On Tuesday the 14th of May 2024 classes 5/6A and 5/6B went on an excursion to government house. Here is a recount of what happened…
In the morning, we went on the bus and drove to government house. Inside we were showed to the ballroom where the governor gave a speech, and we asked a few questions about herself. After the questions we were given some great morning tea and an amazing tour of the house and the grounds.
After that we walked past an old zoo called Beaumaris Zoo and along soldiers walk and to Legacy Park. Unfortunately, there was another school there, and as they were in the playground we had to move on. Luckily Greg our bus driver saved the day by taking us to another park called Simmons Park where we were able to have a lot of fun before we all piled onto the bus and went back to school.
The end
