Richmond Primary School Newsletter 14th August 2024
Principal's Address
Dear Families,
Science Week Open Day
Yesterday we held a very successful open morning to celebrate the work we are doing across the school in science.
The 1/2 classes have been studying the water cycle, water filters and bugs on water. They had a visit from our parent meteorologist Luke Johnston, dad of Esther, who very excitingly made clouds for the students and Joel Cooper, dad of Arla and Bryn who shared his knowledge on Water Filtration.

The prep class have been studying plant life cycles, having grown beans.
The 5/6 students have been studying animal adaptations, one class looking at bird beaks and the other studying the effects of light and energy on animal adaptations.

The 3/4 students have been studying the classifications of living and non-living things and eco systems with some students growing plants very successfully in tiny terrariums.

The Kinders displayed their work on the life cycle of a frog; with tadpoles to view and some wonderful photos of their learning.

![](https://richmondprimary.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1690/ww.png)
From our woodworking group some very luxurious bug hotels.
All this learning was on display along with displays from UTAS Tech Science, Ten Lives Cat Centre, and Rose Bay High School demonstrating fruit DNA, non – Newtonian fluids and other chemistry wonders. Another parent scientist Bec Jones presented the secret life of plants and allowed our students to explore life under the microscope.
Holding these open days each year is another way we as a school communicate with our families and the wider school community all the amazing learning opportunities our students have at Richmond Primary School.

Silent Disco
Last Wednesday the students from Kinder to Year 6 enjoyed the silent disco followed by a sausage sizzle lunch provided by our wonderful School Association and cooked on the day by Andrea Easton and Al Scott, thank you both.
The silent disco is an annual event on our school calendar that allows all students to attend and enjoy the disco. Each child can select the music they like through a variety of channels and most importantly are able to control the volume through their headphones. The disc jockey (host) invites the children to engage in a variety of activities and fun is had by all.
Some of the feedback from our students:
Harrison C. “I love getting your own songs”.
Jordyn and Xav B. “It’s great because there is no Taylor Swift”.
Aubrey “I like how you can pick your own music”.
Declan “I love the music”.
Lachie “I really like the music and hanging with my friends”.
Bella and Ruby “The music and having fun with friends”.
Riley L. “I love the dancing”.
Humphrey “Everything – it’s all amazing”
Elsie and Isla “We both like dancing and choosing our own music”.
Grayson “I liked dancing and the singing at the end was very loud”.
Annie “I really liked doing the colouring in under the table with Noah”.

Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey 2024
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Year 4 - 6 Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
Last week families of students in Years 4 - 6 received a letter regarding the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The letter with information about the survey, included Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact the school on 6260 2191
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives. Students in Year/s 4–6; at Richmond Primary will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey.
The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: the week commencing 26th August 2024
Who: students in Year 4 - 6
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything.
The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and can flourish, so they can engage in learning.

Bullying No Way Day
Finally, just a reminder that tomorrow we have our free dress – Crazy Hair and Socks Day to recognise the importance of respecting the differences we bring to our community and providing a safe and inclusive environment in which everyone can flourish.
At Richmond Primary we take bullying seriously. Children and young people need to know that they are being heard, their feelings matter, and their issue will be investigated respectfully and as a priority.
Young people often tell their friends first and only go to a trusted adult for help as a last resort.
This can mean that when a student does tell a teacher about bullying, it may already be serious and part of a bigger story that has continued for some time.
When bullying is reported, school staff follow up each incident, as they are reported.

Term 3 in Kinder
This term we have had a lot of fun exploring the ‘big kids’ playground ready for us to transition to this space at recess and lunch time next term.
We have also been working on our reading stamina. Every day we spend 20 minutes of quiet time where we choose some books to sit and enjoy independently. We are improving every day!

1/2A
Science
On Wednesday the 31st of July 1/2A and 1/2B were very lucky to have Luke Johnston teach us about clouds. In our science unit this term we are learning about water and so this was a great opportunity for us to learn about how clouds produce water – by an expert himself and metrologist! Luke and his assistant Esther conducted an experiment where a cloud was made in a plastic bottle and released into the air. Students were amazed and had some great questions for Luke.
Riley – What would happen if we did the experiment outside?
Julian – What happens if you did the experiment when it was really cold?
Georgia W – Will it still work if you use a different liquid?
Max – Why don’t you just use water and air?
Thank you, Luke for your time and knowledge. We would like to also thank Joel Cooper for giving his time to help us understand sedimentation in the water treatment process and helping out with the water filters.
The students have gained a better understanding of water in our environment and will support them to further develop their understanding in science this term!

Fractions
We have been developing our understanding of fractions in term 3. We are using hands on materials to explore fractions such as whole, halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths and so on! We have been discussing terms like parts of a whole, denominator, numerator, equal parts and sharing. Students enjoyed using playdough to demonstrate their understanding.

Support your child’s online learning at home
Digital skills are critical to every child’s success, but supporting online learning can be overwhelming.
The Digital skills for families team are delivering a program to help Tasmanian families support online learning at home. Spending time online at home gives children an opportunity to practice what they are learning at school. Positive home environments help children develop the skills and independence they need to succeed in a digital future.
Learn about communicating online with schools, digital education at school and how to support online learning at home.
Digital skills for families are offering free:
