Last week the students who joined the Premiers Reading Challenge for 2024 received certificates in recognition of their reading efforts.
Weekly as a school we also award students with certificates for the number of nights they have read at home. Some of our students have already read for over two hundred nights this year.
Learning to read is a long journey for most children. It usually takes about 10 years - from birth until about Grade 4 till children become independent in their reading and start to become fluent. Although schools take on the responsibility of teaching children to read, we can’t do it without the support of families who read to their children daily and who in their busy days find some time to hear their child read. So, a big thank you to our families and keep up this good work.
Wheels Day – was a great success for most classes, but we did notice a significant drop off in the older student’s engagement in the day. I hope you enjoy the photo gallery.
Lisa Ford – Clinical Psychologist
For those of you that attended the Lisa Ford presentation on resilience last Thursday evening, I think you would agree that Lisa provided sound, easy to follow advice that is both grounded in evidenced based theory and her practice and experience in dealing with young children and families. Lisa’s clear message to us all was the importance of not being a lawn-mower parent, allowing children to experience their own struggles in overcoming problems in their own lives starting with the small problems. Lisa talked about the importance of standing beside them, asking questions, and challenging them so they can solve their problems independently, building their sense of self and self-worth. It was an inspiring presentation.
The following afternoon I was privileged to see this message in practise as a mum encouraged her young son to pack his own scooter into the back of the car after wheels day at school. She guided him with gentle questioning and then congratulated when he achieved his goal. It may have taken a little longer, but the importance of these simple lessons will play out in our children’s lives.
Wheels Day
Last Friday was Wheels Day for our Prep to Year 6 students. It was an enormous success with only a few spills.
Each class had some time to ride and then at recess the Prep to Year 2 students rode around the oval and in the netball court and then at lunch time the primary students were able to ride freely for 30 minutes. It was wonderful to see the stamina and fitness of so many of our students.

It's all about poetry in 3/4A!

Mary Jane wrote a sensory poem about an event during her recent holiday.
On Our Sydney Boat Ride
On our Sydney boat ride, we saw the Harbour Bridge standing tall like a strong lion, proud and majestic.
On our Sydney boat ride, we heard people screaming as loud as possible like guard dogs.
On our Sydney boat ride, we felt the salty water splash on our legs, like fireworks for the New Year.
On our Sydney boat ride, we smelt the freezing air and salt water as cold as a powerful fan blasting in your face.
On our Sydney boat ride, I could taste the salt and dryness, as dry as a towel and as salty as sand on a day at the beach day in Summer.
3/4B Term of Learning
The students in 3/4B have been very busy learning about many different things this term. As a part of our measurement unit, we had a mass relay. In small groups, supplied only with a cloth, students took turns to collect as much water as possible to deliver to their bucket. The goal was for students to get as much water from one end to the other, limiting the spillage. At the end, the groups measured out the water to see how much they had saved. We then collected all the data and analysed our findings.

We were also very lucky to have the cutest visitors in our class. Thank you to the Robertson’s who kindly brought in their ducklings for us to meet. We all had a wonderful time learning about them and their adventures so far.

Alongside 3/4A, we have also been working to create some animal poems. We have spent a lot of time unpacking poetic devices and experimenting with using them to add effect to different passages. Here are some of our poems to share with you!
