Richmond Primary School Newsletter Wednesday 4th June
Principal's Address
Dear Families,
On Thursday, 22nd May, our school held our cross-country event for students from Kinder to Year 6. The day was perfect for running, with bright sunshine and clear skies setting the stage for a fantastic day of fitness and fun.
The event kicked off with the youngest participants from Kinder, who showed incredible enthusiasm and determination as they navigated the course. It was heartwarming to see their smiling faces and hear the cheers of encouragement from parents, students, and teachers alike.
Students from each year group took their turn on the track. The older students demonstrated impressive stamina and speed, with many highlighting their competitive spirit. The camaraderie among the students was evident, as they supported and motivated each other throughout the races. The sense of achievement and pride was palpable as each student crossed the finish line, having given their best effort.
A big thank you to all the teachers, parents, and volunteers who helped make this event a success. Your support and enthusiasm were appreciated. Congratulations to all the students for their fantastic efforts and for making this year's cross-country event a memorable one!

School Camp 2026
At our last School Association meeting the committee agreed that a school camp for our Grade 5 and 6 students should be investigated and actioned by the school.
We are excited to announce that in 2026 our Grade 5 / 6 students will attend the Spring Beach Youth Camp. This camp promises an unforgettable experience for our students, filled with adventure, learning, and fun.
Dates: 18th - 20th May 2026
Duration: 2 nights
Cost: Approximately $320 per student
Located at the picturesque Spring Beach at Orford on Tasmania’s east coast, the camp offers a perfect setting for outdoor activities. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of experiences, including hiking, team-building exercises, and nature exploration.
For parents wanting a payment plan to help manage the financial pressures, the school will send out information shortly, to families directly involved.
Student Free Day Friday 6th June
On Friday 6th June, our teachers will be engaged in moderating student work samples with colleagues from Lauderdale, and South Arm. Moderation gives teachers a chance to work with a larger group of teachers working at the same year levels to ensure that student work is at standard.
This combined moderation is just one aspect of moderation. Moderation is an ongoing process throughout the school year as well as the designated Moderation/Professional Learning Day. Ongoing moderation in collaborative learning teams encourages continuous professional development for teachers. It fosters a shared understanding of curriculum, assessment, and student achievement, leading to improved teaching practices and student learning outcomes.
Just a reminder that Monday is the King’s Birthday public holiday in Tasmania and school resuming on Tuesday 10th June.
Thank You and Congratulations!
A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the SRC's Crazy Hair Day last Thursday! Your creativity and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. Congratulations on successfully raising funds for such a worthy cause—research into diabetes. Your efforts make a real difference! The SRC raised $261.85.

Transition Programs
Transitioning from primary to high school is a significant milestone in a student's educational journey. This period marks a crucial phase where students move from a familiar, nurturing environment to a more challenging and diverse setting. The transition programs, such as those organised by Rose Bay High School and Campania School, play a vital role in ensuring students are well-prepared for this change.
Key Reasons for the Importance of Transition:
- Academic Preparation: High school introduces a more rigorous curriculum and a wider range of subjects. Transition programs help students understand the academic expectations and develop the necessary skills to succeed.
- Social Adjustment: Moving to high school often means meeting new peers and forming new friendships. Transition activities provide opportunities for students to interact with their future classmates, easing social anxieties and fostering a sense of belonging.
- Emotional Support: The shift can be emotionally challenging for many students. Transition programs offer support and guidance, helping students build resilience and confidence as they navigate this new phase.
- Familiarization with the Environment: Visiting high schools and meeting staff, like Principal Mr. Joel Doyle and AP Ms. Claire Gluskie at Rose Bay High School, allows students to become familiar with the new environment, reducing uncertainty and fear.
- Parental Involvement: Parents play a crucial role in their child's transition. By visiting schools and understanding what each institution offers, parents can make informed decisions that best suit their child's needs and preferences.
Local High Schools' Efforts:
- Rose Bay High School: Held their first transition meeting on May 7th, where students learned about their experience at RBHS.
- Campania School: A district school catering to two hundred students from Kindergarten to Year 10, offering a smaller, more intimate setting that has recently attracted more students.
The transition from primary to high school is a significant decision for both parents and students. It requires careful consideration and time to visit each school, including private institutions, to explore the options available. By engaging in these transition programs, students and families can make this important decision with confidence and clarity.
Regards,
Clare McVilly

1/2A News
On Wednesday the 28th of May 1/2A and 1/2B went on a walking excursion around Richmond. As part of our unit in HASS we have been learning about People and Places of Historical Significance. We rotated around 3 activities during the day: a sketch of an old cottage on Bridge Street, the Richmond Gaol and Old Hobart Town Model Village. We had a great time (and were super happy with the warm Autumn weather!) and learnt lots about Richmond’s rich convict history and why our little town is such a special place. Here are some of our reflections and facts about Richmond:
Elsie – We had a very good time learning about history on our excursion!
Bryn – The Richmond Gaol was built in 1825.
Liam – The Model Village is a tiny copy of Hobart.
Joe – The Richmond Gaol has 4 rooms in the women’s solitary.
Teddy – In the Model Village we did a scavenger hunt.
Elliot – At the Model Village we had things to find.
Lola – Richmond gets 500ml of rain per year.
George – The Richmond Gaol is 200 years old.
Annie – The little people at the Model Village are made out of clay, put in the oven and then painted.
Ava – There were 8 rooms in the men’s solitary.
Isobel – We sketched the old cottage on Bridge Street.
Another big thank you to our 6-parent helpers who offered us their time – we can’t do these types of excursions without your help!
Check out some of our photos and some of our sketches of the cottage on Bridge Street!
