Richmond Primary School Newsletter Wednesday 30th July 2025
Principal's Address
Welcome back to Term 3!
It’s great to see everyone settling back into routines and engaging with learning straight away. Please make sure you keep the Term 3 calendar handy as there are many events coming up, including Book Week in Week 5, excursions, sporting events, assemblies, and fundraisers.
During the holidays, our new fence began to take shape, and works will continue over the next couple of weeks. It’s looking fantastic!

Everyday Counts
At Richmond Primary School we value regular attendance because every day counts. Missing school, even a day or two here and there, can quickly add up and impact learning and social connection. Please prioritise attendance wherever possible and let us know if your child is absent by calling the office on 6260 2191 or submitting an absentee form through the Schoolzine app - SZapp.
Did you know? Missing one day of school a fortnight equals 4 weeks of lost learning across the year.
Thank you for your continued support in making attendance a priority.
Book Week – Week 5
We are very excited to celebrate Book Week from Monday 18th – Friday 22nd August. The theme for 2025 is “Book an Adventure” and we have lots planned to celebrate our love of books.
Book Week Parade: Wednesday 20th August at 9:00am outside the ECE classrooms.
Start thinking about your child’s costume for the parade, we can’t wait to see the creativity on show!

NAPLAN
All families of student from year 3 and 5 would have received their child’s NAPLAN results last week. The recent results provide teachers with valuable information to guide the next steps in each child’s learning journey. While these results offer a snapshot in time, they form part of a much bigger picture of your child’s growth and progress. If you have any questions about what the results mean or how you can support learning at home, please don’t hesitate to speak with your child’s teacher. We are proud of the effort and progress our students have made and thank families for their ongoing support.

Wellbeing Focus
This term, our wellbeing focus is on kindness and inclusion. Students are learning how small acts like inviting someone to join in or using kind words help everyone feel safe and connected at school.
Reminders
Please ensure children are wearing full school uniform each day and have labelled jumpers for colder weather.
Check lost property for any missing belongings, our collection box is located inside the office and is currently overflowing with un-named items.
Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club continues Monday and Thursday mornings, thank you to our volunteers, this program wouldn't be possible without you. We are always looking for more helping hands, please see Kate in the office if you would like to add your name to our list.
Keep an eye on upcoming assemblies, excursions and sports events, all dates are in the Term 3 calendar.
Thank you
Jaqui Mason
Acting Principal

1/2B News
We are looking forward to a term filled with lots of interesting learning!
Have a look at what units we have already started in Science and HASS.

Miss Shelverton is teaching us about Sound this term. In our classroom we have lots of interesting things to look at that make sound. A student favourite is the Xylophone – pass our classroom sometime and you might hear somebody playing “Mary had a little lamb” beautifully! This unit falls under Physical Sciences part of the curriculum. Some students have already applied their learning at home and been experimenting with wine glasses to make sound!
HASS
Mrs Parker is teaching us about the Past and Present this term. We are also developing our inquiry skills by asking questions about things like what school was like in the past? As well as homes, toys, games and transport. Visit our classroom soon to see some interesting items from the past.
We took photos of us with our best ‘thinking’ faces. We are going to present some of these in Assembly on July 6th. Frankie was particularly interested to find out that in the past sometimes bones were used to make toys!

I wonder what else we might be wondering and what will we find out? Pop into our classroom to see more of our wonderings!

We are looking forward to welcoming families into our classroom on Wednesday the 20th of August for our literacy open morning.

Researching and Exploring Marine Animals
The ¾ Hub have been learning all about marine animals. In term 2, our science inquiry focused on marine animal life cycles and ecosystems. During the term, the students all selected a marine animal to research for their information poster. The students spent several weeks collecting information and refining their summary, before putting together their poster. The students classified their marine animal, identified its role in the marine ecosystem, explained their life cycle, constructed a detailed food chain, identified challenges and found several exciting fun facts. Aren’t the finished products simply amazing?

To support our learning of marine animals, the students got to go on an excursion to the Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre. This was a jam-packed excursion that included many impressive activities. The students were able to get up close and personal with the animals in the touch pool, even being able to feed a shark! They got the opportunity to control a submarine and explore the seafloor. Plus, they even got to experience a virtual reality, filled with marine animals and aquatic ecosystems. This is just to name a few of the brilliant activities.

Japanese News
Welcome to Japanese in the ‘Year of the Snake’. As there are 12 animals in the Chinese/Japanese Zodiac, students in Grade 6, who were born 12 years ago (2013), were born in the last ‘Year of the Snake’. Likewise, all babies born this year will be a ‘Year of the Snake’ baby. In Japanese the word for snake is: へび (hebi). Attributes of ‘Snake Year’ people are as follows: wise, patient, innovative, diplomatic, artistic, imaginative, with a good sense of humour. Students in all classes have designed a heading page for ‘The Year of the Snake’ as well as making and decorating their own origami へび.
Some students designed a poster for the statewide ‘Year of the Snake’ poster competition, which was run by The Japanese Teachers’ Network of Tasmania. Congratulations to the following students whose posters were selected for the competition: Declan B, Mary-Jane E, Georgina P, Daisy T, Aubrey W, Clover P, Felix A, Isabelle G and Lola R.
In Term 2, students at Richmond Primary have been fortunate to welcome Mr Mao Iizuka from The Japan Foundation into their lessons. Students have really enjoyed meeting and working with Mao.
Please enjoy some photos of Japanese students and their work.
