Richmond Primary School Newsletter 13th September 2023
Principal's Address
Dear Families,
On Friday, we held our 3 -6 Swimming Carnival at the Clarence pool, a day everyone enjoyed. We changed our program this year to include more novelty events that allowed for greater student involvement. Congratulations to Thomson for winning the event. Thank you to Mr Nichols for organising the event, which ran smoothly, and to our excellent staff and volunteers.
STUDENT WELLBEING AND ENGAGEMENT SURVEY
Our Year 4 to 6 students are undertaking the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. This survey aims to provide information that enables us to continue to support wellbeing and ensure that students feel connected, safe, and ready to learn here at Richmond Primary. I will share the school results through our newsletter when the data is returned.
SCHOOL SATISFACTION SURVEY
The 2023 School Satisfaction Surveys are open. Every year, the Department for Education, Children and Young People conducts a School Satisfaction Survey to determine what your child(ren)'s school does well and where it may improve.
We would be grateful if you completed our online survey about Richmond Primary School. Your feedback is essential to help us inform our school planning and decision-making.
The survey is open from Monday, 28 August 2023, until Friday, 22 September 2023 , and should take 5 minutes to complete.
Take the online survey by clicking on this link or pasting it in your browser: https://ncv.microsoft.com/cxd7xm4TD2

Head Lice
Unfortunately, at the moment we have several classes with repeated incidents of head lice.
What are head lice?
Head lice are small, wingless insects that live in the hair on your head and can be challenging to eradicate. They can only survive in human hair, feed from the scalp several times a day, and survive up to two days off the person's head. Though not dangerous, head lice are a common problem for children between the ages of 3 and 11, have nothing to do with personal hygiene or cleanliness, and do not carry disease.
Head lice can crawl onto your scalp when your head touches the head of someone with head lice, and although rare, they can be transferred through a hairbrush or hat.
Lice eggs are called nits and are about the size of a small flake of dandruff but cannot be easily shaken off or brushed out. Lice lay their nits on hair shafts close to the scalp and rely on the warmth of the head to hatch. Nits hatch within one to two weeks of being laid, and once hatched, the shell looks white or clear and stays firmly attached to the hair shaft. If lice are not treated, this process repeats about every 3 weeks.
What are the signs?
The first signs that your child may have head lice is an itchy feeling in the hair, frequent scalp itchiness or sores/scabs from scratching. It is essential to be aware that the itching may not be immediate, and, in some cases, it can take weeks before your child starts to complain.
Please ensure if your child has long hair, it is tied up. It is one way we can help manage the spread. If you require more information about treatments, please get in touch with the school office.
Prep News
Wow! It is amazing to think that our Prep students are about to embark on their final term for 2023.
We began the term by celebrating 100 days of school. We have enjoyed watching a larva spurting volcano experiment in the sandpit during National Science Week, dressing up for Book Week, dancing until we dropped at the silent disco and presenting our Gingerbread Man art and writing in assembly.
Flow painting, with Mrs Richardson was a hit for Father’s Day gifts and many students were tempted to keep them for themselves.
Yesterday we began some clay sculptures with Mrs Ross for the Garden Week display and today we are finally off to the Nature play space at Clarence Family Centre.
Ian, from Exit Left joins us every Tuesday afternoon for singing. There is always high engagement and delighted faces observable during these sessions.
Please enjoy the photos from the term so far.

It has been a very busy and productive term for Grade 5/6 A with lots of additional activities for children to participate in and enjoy.
Some of these activities have included the Antarctic incursion and a visit from the Young Scientists in schools’ program. We all enjoyed dressing up for Book Week and loved the opportunity to dance away at the Silent Disco. Mrs Ross kindly offered her help throughout the term and we enjoyed the experience of making tiny houses and a village scene out of clay.
A few students were selected as part of the Bunnings Crew where they created a variety of hands-on projects including a tool box.
Our mathematical brains and good team work were tested in the recent Maths Relay, organised by Mr Johnston and this Friday will also be the last of the Winter Sports netball and football games against other local primary schools.
It has been wonderful to see the children participating so positively and having fun.

Maths Relay
Thomson House came away victorious after a fun day for students in Grades 1-6 at the annual Maths Relay. Well done to our 1/2 team of Hazel, Ivy, Riley and Milo who were the only students in the entire school to successfully create the pentomino rectangle.
